History
In 1996, with the aim of deepening and accelerating research on the development of clean, high-efficiency coal energy technologies for the energy sector and implementing their results at thermal power plants in Ukraine, a Scientific and Technical Center for Coal Energy Technologies (STCCET) was established. This was based on the Department of High-Temperature Energy Conversion of the Institute of Energy Conservation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, through a joint decree by the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, B.E. Paton, and the Minister of Energy and Electrification of Ukraine, O. M. Sheberstov, dated February 12, 1996, No. 20/29. The main scientific directions of its activities were defined as follows:
- development of new high-efficiency, environmentally clean technologies for the combustion and gasification of domestic coal for use in Ukraine's energy sector;
- thermal and electro-physical research aimed at increasing the efficiency of converting thermal energy into electrical energy;
- ful emissions from thermal power plants into the environment.

In 2002, considering the importance of the scientific directions and issues related to the development of clean, high-efficiency coal energy technologies being addressed by the STCCET, as well as the results obtained for Ukraine's energy sector and the level of qualified scientific personnel, the STCCET was reorganized into the Institute of Coal Energy Technologies (ICET) through a joint decree of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine dated December 24, 2002, No. 464/752. The dual subordination status and the main directions of fundamental and applied scientific research were preserved. In 2007, for the purpose of streamlining the management of state property, the Institute of Coal Energy Technologies was removed from dual subordination, and through a joint decree of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine dated May 14, 2007, No. 145/230, it is currently an institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
To ensure the reliable operation and sustainable development of the energy sector, as well as to fulfill the tasks concerning Ukraine's energy independence, guided by the laws of Ukraine "On the Management of State-Owned Property" and "On the Features of the Legal Regime of Activity of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Sectoral Academies of Sciences, and the Status of Their Property Complex," the Statute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and considering the excerpt from the protocol of the Bureau of the Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine dated February 23, 2021, No. 3 regarding the renaming of the Institute of Coal Energy Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine—it is now known as the Institute of Thermal Energy Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In the year of the 100th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2018), a book titled "Institute of Coal Energy Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: History and Present" was published, summarizing the history of the establishment and development of the Institute as a leading scientific organization in the field of thermal energy.
