Institute of Thermal Power Technologies

     Thermal Energy Technology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine - a research institute of the NAS of Ukraine, which is part of the Division of Physical and Technical Problems of Energy (PTPE) of the NAS of Ukraine.

     Over the past thirty years, continuously improving and expanding, it has undergone a series of transformations - from the Division of High-Temperature Energy Conversion (DHTEC) of the NAS of Ukraine, which served as the basis for its establishment, to the Scientific and Technical Center for Coal Energy Technologies (STCCET) of the NAS of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, and finally to the Institute of Coal Energy Technologies (ICET) of the NAS of Ukraine, which it currently succeeds. The STCCET - ICET was headed by: Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Yu.P. Korchuev (1997-2009), and Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, O.Yu. Maistreko (2009-2011). Currently, the institute is headed by Acting Director N.I. Dunaievska.

     The main tasks of the Institute are:

  • Conducting fundamental and applied research aimed at acquiring new knowledge and its practical implementation in the fuel and energy complex (FEC) of Ukraine, as well as enhancing the energy security of Ukraine;
  • Developing new environmentally friendly energy technological processes;
  • Developing new processes for cleaning combustion/gasification products from harmful emissions;
  • Developing new diagnostic instruments for high-temperature processes;
  • Developing and implementing new state standards (including harmonized with ISO) regulating the quality of solid fuels and their use, as well as environmentally oriented industry guidelines and programs aligned with the Directives of the European Community;
  • Scientifically and technologically supporting the introduction of new environmentally safe technologies in the energy and other sectors of the country’s economy.

     The institute has more than five scientific departments and laboratories.

     Research is conducted in the following main areas:

  • kinetics of combustion and gasification processes of solid fuels, including under pressure;
  • studying the dynamics of fuel particle pyrolysis;
  • developing processes in various modifications of fluidized beds, including circulating fluidized beds;
  • physical and technical foundations of cleaning processes for combustion and gasification products from sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and dust;
  • mathematical modeling of energy processes; creating new analytical and diagnostic equipment for monitoring high-temperature processes and many others.
